Autumn Colours at Otaki Keikoku
Not many people know that Toyota City, located in Aichi Prefecture of the Chubu Region in Japan, is home to anything other than the headquarters of automobile giant Toyota.
This amazing gorge, called Otaki Gorge (王滝渓谷), is only a 20-30 minute drive from Toyota station, and is actually very accessible.
As you’ll see in the video, there is a stream lined with beautiful momiji trees that change their color in autumn.
Autumn foliage is known as kouyou (紅葉 / こうよう), literally meaning “red leaves”.
In this area, the peak for kouyou is about mid to late November.
Another famous kouyou location in the area is called “kourankei”, and is known around the country as one of the best spots.
The beautiful color and scenery of kouyou is fleeting, as are all seasonal things in Japan, lasting only a few weeks. Another example is cherry blossoms (sakura) – where the beautiful flowers bloom and fall within the space of about 2 weeks, if you’re lucky.
In this particular video, you’ll see Otaki Gorge, a temple, and a picturesque coffee shop which is located very close-by called “Work Bench Coffee Roasters” (http://workbench.coffee/), which I highly recommend.
At the coffee shop, you are able to sit inside a traditional Japanese house (民家, minka) to enjoy your beverage. Inside you will be mesmerized by beautiful ornaments. As you will see in the video, the view of the Japanese gardens and mountains from the rooms are breathtaking.
